What are the main parts of the computer?

There are many ways to define the main parts of the computer.

When we say parts we are talking about the components. These parts can be identified as peripherals devices, input and output devices, hardware and software and so on…

Anyway if you have a desktop, a tower, a laptop or a notebook computer, the parts are the same, have the same names even though the size are different. 

Now let’s see the main components

You can notice that there are parts inside the computer case and other outside. Ordinarily when we talk about computer parts we always forget the case.

The case is the skin of the computer. It is the box which holds all the components.

Inside the case we there are two main parts: the computer power supply and the motherboard.

The power supply or PSU provides the power to the whole computer parts to run on. Without PSU your computer is simply dead.

The motherboard is also called main board or mobo. This is where all the other inside parts are connected between them and to the power supply. The motherboard contains also various connectors named I/O ports to receive input and output devices.

Attached to the board we find the brain of the computer. It is the microprocessor or central processing unit or CPU. The processor handles instructions and is supplied by the memory cards. Like the power supply your computer has no functions without this basic part.

Talking about the memory cards that device saves all your instructions while the computer is still running and works alongside with the CPU. The memory is also called RAM meaning Random Accessed Memory.

There two other important cards attached to the computer: the sound card and the graphic or video card. Nowadays you won’t always see them inside a computer because manufacturers prefer to build them in to the computer. This is one of the reasons why computer are becoming so cheap.

Let’s not forget the Disk drive or hard drive or also hard disk. This part is a capacity storage area. The hard drive is where all your information is stored. The more capacity it has the more data it can receive.

The CD or DVD Rom commonly known as Read Only Memory (ROM) is not simply a device to play songs and movies. The main task for this computer part is to help you installing software to make the computer run.

Finally you can notice a fan inside the computer. Sometimes one is hold on the top of the CPU and the other, if there is, closed to the case. These parts are extremely vital to your computer because their functions are to make the CPU as cool as possible while it is working because it heats up a lot.

Now outside the computer some main parts need to be identified also.

The computer mouse and the computer keyboard are two main input devices. In a laptop or notebook the manufacturers always build these basic parts into the box. With a tower or desktop they are separated parts.

The computer keyboard is used to enter information and issue instructions to the
computer. The computer mouse is used to command and point things shown on the monitor.

The computer monitor is an output device. This main part allows you to see what you or your computer is doing. It is like a TV show.

And the software

You know, even though you have all these parts your computer won’t be able to run without software particularly application software. Software is not a device because you cannot see it or touch it.

The main application software you need to run your computer is called operating systems. The most known and the most used software are Microsoft Windows, Linux or Apple Mac OS.

All of them constitute the main parts of the computer. All the other parts names are considered as accessories.
