How to install PC power supply properly


Install desktop power supply is an easier but most dangerous task when you are building a system.

Understand that when it concerns power, the danger is always possible.

But don’t worry you won’t be hurt if you follow these free instructions to install your PSU.

At this step you should know some precautions to consider, for avoiding any kind of hurt from your desktop power supply.



First, never try to open the box. If a problem occurs contact a technician.

If you have a new PSU you don’t have really to be worry. When you need to upgrade or change a dead desktop power supply, you should know that the power supply is able to preserve electric charges even after unplug it.

Normally these precautions are only available for desktop and tower computer. For a Laptop and Notebook just buy your battery and use it.

Now let’s see the steps.
  • 1 – Install the Power Supply
In the back of the desktop power supply you can observe four mounting holes. These holes match the same number of holes found on the back of your case. Hold the box and insert it inside the case aligning the entire holes you already notice on the case.

Take your time, hold the box tightly and avoid hitting any components of the motherboard. Once you match the holes, handling the box steady inside the case and start screw the holes in the back outside the case.

You should do it simultaneously. Screw the two top mounts first, then screw the two other holes at the bottom. Patience and dexterity make the job well done. Easy, isn’t it!
  • 2 – Switching the voltage.
In the description of the main computer components, you have learnt that the power supply comes with voltage switch. Some countries use a 220-230V outlet while it is only 110-115V for others.

According to the country you are living in, you’ll need to switch your power supply voltage to be usable by the computer. Otherwise the disaster will be innumerable. To avoid problems, look at the back of the PC power supply box, and move the switch up to 110-115V or down to 220-230V.
  • 3 - Supply Power to the system
Now your power supply is ready to supply power to the computer. First, plug the leads of the PSU into the motherboard. Then look for the other cables to plug the other devices such as hard drive, CD/DVD drive and the Floppy drive.

Ensure that all your connections are safe and all the units are ready to be supplied by the power unit. Is everything ok? So plug your power supply to the wall outlet, press the front panel switch and let the computer run.

It’s not necessary to plug your monitor. The system is not ready yet to display. Now you should unplug the computer to continue the installation process.
